The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and Residential Child Care Licensing Executive Leadership Teams will provide an overview of the short and long-term priorities and goals for the child and family well-being system.

Youth-Initiated Leadership

10 to 11 a.m.

This session will focus on the power that youth-initiated leadership has in improving outcomes for youth going through the child welfare system. A panel of youth will share their experiences of challenges in the foster care system and the solutions that they initiated to overcome those challenges. The session will highlight the impact that youth can create in their communities when they are given the power to lead and will guide those wanting to engage youth to do so in a sustainable and meaningful manner. Participants will increase knowledge and understanding of how to engage foster youth to provide input, guidance, and feedback to child welfare organizations on a regular basis in order to design and provide programs that support positive youth development and positive permanency outcomes. Learning how to engage youth as leaders in child welfare program design and implementation is a national practice best standard and a critical part of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the child welfare system. Participants will be taught how to engage in youth-centered practice and how to share decision-making power with youth leaders.
